The painting below by
Michael Bowen depicts the mental images shared by those of us who fled
the stultifying sameness of the prefabricated 1950's for artistic
and sexual freedom. Another freedom that Michael has defended is spiritual
Freedom. Meaning the right to personally discover what is true. Little
did we know at the time the traumatic damage that would accrue to ourselves
and the ones we loved, particularly our children. For many, love
came to mean only lust.
Some of us have survived and have
rearranged our lives for the sake of others.
Michael is a great artist because
his paintings go beneath the flesh and expose the spirits that drove us
toward the abyss. Most of those we were close to, in the late 50s and early
60s, are dead from substance abuse. Mental
illness captured others and more than a few rot behind bars.
