Hi Daniel:
I just finished reading the additions to the 'Food for
Thought' page. It
took me back to when Debbie and I, and of course our
first born, Mindy (she
was only a couple months old)came to Fresno.
It was October or November of 1971. Debbie and I
had been married almost
two years and had a brand new baby girl we named Mindy.
Debbie and I had
recently accepted the Lord as our saviour and were living
in Albany Oregon.
We tried the churches in the area but it never clicked
for us. A man named
Bruce George arrived in town and I was introduced to
him by a Christian
friend named Gary Mann. Brother Bruce was a rebel
of sorts. He was
preaching something I hadn't yet heard in my young life
as a Christian. He
honestly believed that the gospel was really only JESUS.
Not church, not
anything else, just Jesus. Brother Bruce mentioned
that he was headed back
to California and was going to stop at a Christian house
in Fresno on 8th
Street. The more he spoke of this place and told
me of fellow Christians
living the gospel as was set forth in the book of Acts,
the more I wanted
to go and ba a part of it.
In late December of 1971, Debbie and I sold our furniture
and most
everything else and began our trek to Fresno with Brother
Bruce. We
arrived late one evening around the 20th of December.
I was amazed at how
many Christians there were. They were sincere and
wanted to live the gospel.
Brother Bruce George moved on but we stayed. I haven't
heard from Bruce in
many years. He had a very simple gospel which I
think was almost too
simplistic for even Dale. I can still hear Bruce
saying; 'It's Jesus, just
Jesus. Nothing else'. He was a simple man with
a simple message and
somewhat of a black sheep of the converted hippies of
that era. But now as
I look back in time, with many years of serving God under
my belt, I think
Bruce was right on. It really is Jesus and only
Jesus. Praise God!!
Over the next 7 years we grew and learned under our elders
in the Lord like
Dale Mowry, and of course you Daniel, and many others.
Praise be to the
Lord Jesus!
Daniel I am glad you are putting the information on your
website. It is
very encouraging to me. Now I am even thinking
about doing something too.
Perhaps a History of the 8th Street Christian House.
God is working in my
heart and mind these days.
I have been praying that God bless you and your family.
I will continue to
do so.
