My wife, Cynthia, was a banker's daughter from Minneapolis and in 1968 she inherited a few hundred thousand dollars from her uncle Don Blanding (Poet Laurat of Hawaii) with which we bought a ranch near Missoula, Montana and supported our favorite causes. We both had a shadow of faith in a very ill-defined God but no understanding of the unique role of Jesus Christ in the plan of salvation.
Suddenly our Father in heaven intervened in our lives and I found myself behind bars in jeopardy of losing my wife, my son, and my liberty. I had committed no immidiate crime that brought about the severity of my situation, but a technicality, arising from my being on probation from California for possession of Marijuana placed me under the jurisdiction of the State of Montana when I became a property owner. The authorities of Montana viewed us as rich hippies and wanted us gone. So, I was shipped back to California in handcuffs and chains, though the authorities in California were not even interested in my case.
However, God had convicted me of sin and I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was GUILTY of much more than the law was accusing me of.
I was held in the Missoula jail for 90 days before being shipped back to California and, it was during that period that my conversion took place. Up until that time I did not believe in SIN, the DEVIL, or HELL. Our Father gave me a vision of hell and I knew that, because of sin, I was about to have a permanent abode there. But what could I do? I prayed. I asked him to show me. Finally, after about two weeks, I found a Bible someone had placed on my bunk. When I saw it I remembered the words of a woman who had spoken to me two years earlier.
It was November, 1966 and, while on my honeymoon
with Cynthia, on the island of Maui, we met a Zen master, who offered us
a place to stay and instruction in esoteric Buddhism. One day a group of
tourists came into the temple where I, with a shaved head and wearing the
traditional robe, was going about my daily duties. A middle-aged woman
said to me, "What's a boy like you doing here?" I said, "I'm studying the
relief of pain and suffering." She said, "What do you think about Jesus?"
I
responded with the typical hippie quip, "Jesus
is alright."We talked further and she said, "Don't you know you must accept
Jesus as your personal savior?" Those were her parting words and they meant
nothing until two years later.
So, when I saw the Bible on my bunk and could hear the words of a Christian witness ringing in my ears I said, "Alright God, if its got to be Jesus, I'll follow Jesus. Then, for the first time, I read the New Testament, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. As a result from that first reading, I knew that Jesus was my Lord. I heard his command, "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men." I said, "Yes, Lord, I will follow."
It was 9 months from the time I accepted the Lord until I was released from the jail in Fresno County, California. So, I had plenty of time to have my feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
Eight to ten hours a day I studied and waited because he said, "Repent and be baptized for the remission of sins and you shall receive the Holy Ghost." I knew I had repented but who would baptize me? After I was released my wife joined me in California and we heard about a small, but powerful ministry in Rio Linda, near Sacramento. We went there and met the young preacher, Cecil Barnes. He baptized us in the Rio Linda Creek and we both received the Holy Ghost, The Comforter who Jesus calls the Spirit of Truth. A note about Cecil Barnes. He had been led to the Lord a year earlier by an old Oklahoma "Brush Arbor Baptist" called Troy McGrath.
My wife, Cynthia died of brain cancer in Taos, New Mexico in 1977 and I married my present wife, Abigail Storm.
More than once in the last twenty years I have drifted off the straight and narrow path so that I have real knowledge of being filled with my own ways and backsliding. But, more important, I have seen our Lord correct and chasten me so I can be sure he loves me.
Now, today, he says let your light so shine among men that they might see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
The testimony of how we came to Woodstock with six of our seven children, seven years ago, is part of the book I am writing, "Ghosts of Woodstock." During that time we have participated in the annual reunions of the Woodstock Nation at Yasgur's Woodstock site and witnessed what God is doing there.
Max Yasgur's Farm is in Sullivan County, New York in a town called Bethel meaning "House of God." Every year thousands of people return there in August for a reunion of those who were affected by the 1969 event. The interesting thing is most of the people who gather there are parents and grandparents accompanied by their children. So, it is a family affair.
Peace and freedom are experienced by those who attend. God gets all the glory because every year political and commercial interests attempt to seize the ground and every year the Peace and Love of the celebrants win the day.
My wife, Abigail Storm, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, has created the Woodstock Nation Foundation as a fiduciary instrument to raise the funds to buy the land from the present owner and maintain it in perpetuity for all to freely assemble.

As Moses said to Pharaoh, "Let my people go that we may be free to serve God." How do we serve God? By loving one another. How do we love one another? By sharing with one another. How do we share with one another? By assembling with one another.
The nucleus of those of us who work on this
Woodstock project are joined together by the blood and name of Jesus, but
most would tell you they are there because of LOVE.
It's the greatest fishing hole I ever discovered
if you're interested in fishing for men. And remember, the Kingdom of God
is like a large net that is cast into the sea and it catches all kinds
of fish. Then the angels come and sort it out.
