At the request of alleged owner June
Gelish, (Alan Gerry had already made a deal for control of the property
in July), State Troopers were informing these pilgrims that they must take
down their tent or be arrested for trespassing. Thanks to the help of many local people who were concerned about
the police action taken at the site last summer, a change in attitude has
begun to manifest in Sullivan County. The new County Manager, Jonathan
Drapkin and his "Sullivan First" program to clean up the county, has helped
to motivate people to put on a new face. The whole county has taken a fresh
new approach to enhancing its economic future and everyone is pitching
in. After all, Woodstock reunions have brought bounty to the county ever
since 1969. You know the movie, "Field of Dreams" "If you build it they
will come" Well, we have our field
of dreams, Sullivan County. And, as Jim, the manager of Shop rite and
supporter of "Sullivan First" says, "If we clean it, they will come."
Now, we all know the Woodstock site was made famous by the love
that flowed like a river for miles around and what happened there has continued
to touch the lives of people in such a remarkable way that some
Bethel landowners and residents want to share this experience so bad
they are making sure there is a well organized host environment for this
summer's assembly.
And, of course, it is the immediate goal of the Woodstock
Nation Foundation to assure and secure the unobstructed public use
of the historic Woodstock site at the corner of Hurd and West Shore Roads
for those who are peacefully assembling August 15-17, 1999.
Let's take the opportunity to host the many pilgrims who have travelled
from as far away as Japan to
share some peace, love & music.
